MARY CORNELIUS-REID LOVED VISITING PORTUGAL AND HAD A HOLIDAY HOME IN THE ALGARVE

As she expanded her property portfolio in the UK, she decided to add a retirement village in this sun-drenched region of southern Europe which she felt such affinity for.

She found a derelict Portuguese quinta with stables and 22 acres of land in the tranquil hills of Gorjoes and set about creating a stunning retirement village inspired by the ancient village of Alte, with traditional calcada cobblestone streets, mellow Portuguese stone walls, and 33 terracotta tiled villas, town houses and apartments.

The quinta was converted into a 16-room care home with qualified nurses and 24-hour nursing assistance.

Mrs Cornelius-Reid A.M. M.B.E. also had a church built on the old corn grinding circle, which she gifted to the community. The only consecrated Anglican church in the Algarve, St Luke’s holds regular services, concerts and fund-raising events and wedding blessings.

The first retirement village in the Algarve, both Monte da Palhagueira and its church were opened by Sir Cliff Richard in 1999.

Santa Bárbara de Nexe é uma aldeia e freguesia portuguesa que ocupa a parte noroeste do município de Faro, Algarve central, confina diretamente com 3 sedes de concelho, Faro a S, Loulé a W e S. Brás de Alportel a N, actualmente devido à reforma administrativa de 2013 é a freguesia menos populosa do concelho com 38,22 km² de área[1] e 4 116 habitantes (2011). A sua densidade populacional é de 108,4 hab/km², o que lhe permite ser classificada como uma Área de Baixa Densidade (portaria 1467-A/2001).

Identidade
A Terra de Nexe, em pleno Barrocal, entre a Serra e o Mar, com a sua Igreja Matriz e com vistas sobre o litoral, caracteriza-se, desde há vários séculos, pela habitação e pequenos núcleos populacionais dispersos. Actualmente também é reconhecida como destino turístico e nas áreas da música de acordeão e do trabalho artístico em pedra[carece de fontes].

Localização
No Algarve, Portugal, entre Faro, Loulé e São Brás de Alportel, entre o mar e a serra, num ambiente mediterrânico, a 10 km do Aeroporto Internacional de Faro e de várias praias e campos de golfe, é servida pela EM 520 e pelos nós de Loulé-Sul e Faro / S. Brás da A21 Via do Infante. Nos seus limítrofes encontra-se o Estádio Algarve e o Parque das Cidades.
